Transition to Bioeconomy Conference Feb 12-13, 2008
When: February 12-13, 2008
Where: Westin Atlanta Airport Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia
Sponsor: A conference sponsored by Farm Foundation and USDA
Biofuels are a reality in the marketplace. We are rapidly transitioning to a BioEconomy with significant implications for agriculture, the food system, rural communities and the global economy. You and your colleagues are working on a variety of research and education programs related to biofuels.
This is the first of a series of a conferences planned by Farm Foundation and USDA to examine how the rapidly evolving transition to a bioeconomy will impact U.S. agriculture, the food system, rural communities and the global economy over the next decade. These conferences will be a platform to inventory current knowledge, highlight lessons learned, examine possibilities for the future and identify future needs. The objective information and analysis generated through these conferences will help leaders in industry, government, rural communities and academia make more informed decisions related to the bioeconomy.
The February 2008 conference focuses on the integration of agricultural and energy systems. It will explore farming systems, markets for by- and co-products, potential impacts of the bioeconomy on animal agriculture, energy efficiency and biotechnology. It will also examine new farming and energy systems may be needed to support the cellulosic industry, which many experts believe will become commercially viable over the next decade.
This conference is targeted to producers, processors, input suppliers, community leaders, government agency representatives, commodity group leaders and academics. This conference is an opportunity to hear reports on cutting edge research and dialogue with industry and government leaders.
Detailed program information, as well as registration and hotel information is available at the Farm Foundation Web site, www.farmfoundation.org. Early bird registration of $200 is available until January 28, after which the fee will be $230.

Park Falls - The midday steam whistle is blowing again, sounding the return of opportunities to a mill town that has been through the wringer.
The resurrection of Flambeau River Papers is a credit to community spirit but also to homegrown entrepreneurialism. Those with high hopes for Flambeau cite the fresh perspective and risk tolerance of William “Butch” Johnson, who pulled the business out of bankruptcy last year and is pushing it to be more than a moribund papermaker.
The company has yet to post a profitable month five quarters after starting up again. But Johnson says it is making more pulp and paper than ever. And employee-led initiatives to reduce energy costs have achieved savings exceeding $2 million a year.
But the brightest prospects are still on the drawing board. (more…)

Seventh part in an occasional series
Wisconsin already leads the nation in making electricity from cow manure. Now it hopes to tap its farm and forest resources to develop the next generation of biofuels in the race to curb global warming emissions. Cars and trucks are the second-leading contributor of greenhouse gas emissions after coal-fired power plants, so around the state, efforts are under way to juice up production of renewable fuels.
