Biofuels may threaten environment, U.N. warns (from cnn.com 1-23-08)
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — The world’s rush to embrace biofuels is causing a spike in the price of corn and other crops and could worsen water shortages and force poor communities off their land, a U.N. official said Wednesday.
Workers in North Sumatra pile up palm oil fruit, which can be used to make biofuels.
Speaking at a regional forum on bioenergy, Regan Suzuki of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization acknowledged that biofuels are better for the environment than fossil fuels and boost energy security for many countries (continue reading).

Biofuel patents are booming (from Exchange Morning Post 1-22-08)

Patents in the biofuel sector dominated renewable energy in 2007, and there are more on the way.
Over the last six years, a total of 2,796 biofuel related patents were published in the U.S., with the number increasing by over 150 percent in each of the past two years.
In 2007, the number of biofuel patents (1,045) was more than the combined total of solar power (555) and wind power (282) patents published in that year. (continue reading)
