Wisconsin firms win funds for renewable energy projects, The Business Journal of Milwaukee
Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle said Tuesday that more than $7 million in financial aid is being awarded to Wisconsin firms to help finance research, development and commercialization or adoption of new renewable energy technologies.
The awards include $1 million to Virent Energy Inc. of Madison, which will use the mix of grant and loan funds to design, build, and operate a pilot production plant capable of producing up to 10,000 gallons of gasoline per year from carbohydrates in biomass.
The funds from the Wisconsin Energy Independence Fund require a 50 percent match. The awards will leverage $44.2 million in investments and create new jobs for Wisconsin families on farms, in forests, in research labs and for manufacturers, Doyle said.
“From manufacturing wind turbines and solar panels to retro-fitting fuel pumps and exploring the latest clean technologies, our future lies in seizing green opportunities that will create good jobs for our citizens and add billions of dollars to our economy,” Doyle said.
Doyle made the announcement at Greenstone Technologies in Madison. Eight Madison-area projects totaling $2,498,000 are receiving funding. Greenstone is using $250,000 to develop a working prototype of a solar window, a window capable of generating electricity using solar power.
Other awards include:
- $55,000 to hydroelectric company Steinbine Development LLC, Deerfield, to evaluate an impulse turbine to recover unutilized hydropower resources;
- $250,000 grant for SolRayo LLC, Madison, for the commercialization of a new material to cut costs and increase the electrical energy storage of ultra-capacitors, making wind and solar energy more practicable for utility use;
- $350,000 grant to C5-6 Technologies Inc., Middleton, to develop new enzymes designed to significantly increase ethanol yield in current corn ethanol plants;
- $243,000 grant to Silatronix Inc., Madison, a start-up company founded to develop a new electrolyte component for use in lithium ion batteries and ultra capacitors;
- $250,000 grant to Great Lakes Ag Energy LLC, Fitchburg, to perfect the conversion of agricultural residues, byproducts, and wood biomass to nano-porous cellulose for conversion to biofuel; and
- $100,000 grant to Bio-Energy & Environment LLC, Madison, to help fund both research into algae growth and production variables and the development of a small prototype “closed reactor” cultivation plant.
