Wisconsin Biomass Collect Demonstration and Briefing, November 19, 2008

We will demonstrate a single pass corn stover harvester and a recently-acquired field cuber to show several cost-effective ways to harvest excess biomass sources like corn wastes, switchgrass and other grasses. The event will go on rain or shine but wet weather may limit our ability to run the cuber.

We will then discuss biomass’s current and potential to provide clean renewable energy for Wisconsin. Wisconsin has enough excess biomass to displace half of its current coal and/or 40% of our gasoline consumption. (more…)

book Earth: The Sequel, spoke about the fight to reverse global warming
during a recent stop in Madison. He was the keynote speaker for the first
Wisconsin Bioenergy Summit held in October.

Models Help Assess Biofuels’ Sustainability, Agricultural Research Service, USDA

Many agricultural products can be converted into feedstocks for alternative fuel. Now analysis from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) suggests that they can be used this way without reducing the nation’s food supply, soil production capacity or environmental quality.

ARS scientists are collaborating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (ERS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, and USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service to assess the economic impact of feedstock production. At locations around the United States, ARS scientists are evaluating how individual and combined management decisions influence different farming systems. (more…)

Xcel Energy Announces Largest Biomass Plant in Midwest

Project would make Bay Front Power Plant one of the largest in nation

ASHLAND, Wis. – Xcel Energy announced today that it will submit an application to
the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) to install pioneering technology at the
Bay Front Power Plant in Ashland, Wis. to allow it to generate electricity from biomass in all
three operating units. When complete, the Bay Front Power Plant will be the largest biomass-
fueled power plant in the Midwest and one of the largest in the nation.  (more…)

SRI Consulting Publishes Global 2008 Biodiesel Report

The United States is positioned to become the single largest biodiesel market with 19% of consumption by 2012. The industry grew 50% from 2002-2007, the highest growth in the chemical industry, and is now positioned to grow at 30% between 2007 and 2012. Today, SRI Consulting (SRIC) released its global 2008 Biodiesel report that provides the most comprehensive and timely information on the world-wide biodiesel industry and trends. (more…)
